"I believe what you need is more diplomacy, not less. That’s why it’s so important to be here as a UK Foreign Secretary and to keep coming back. And of course, I was able to have dialogue with the Chinese on areas where we disagree. Areas like Hong Kong. Areas like Taiwan, areas like human rights in Xinjiang, we were able to have those conversations and raise difficult, challenging issues."

STORYLINE:
The UK’s foreign secretary called for more dialogue with Beijing on Saturday as he concluded his first visit to China since the Labour government came to power in July.
David Lammy’s two-day trip is an attempt to reset ties with Beijing after relations turned frosty in recent years over spying allegations, China’s support for Russia in the Ukraine war and a crackdown on civil liberties in Hong Kong, a former British colony.
On Friday, Lammy met with Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang and held talks with his counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing, where he said he raised challenging issues with Chinese officials such as Hong Kong, Taiwan and human rights in the remote Xinjiang region.
