“The death of the leader of Hamas (Yahya Sinwar) represents a moment of justice. He had the blood of Americans, and Israelis, and Palestinians and Germans and so many others on his hands. I told the prime minister of Israel yesterday – let’s also make this moment an opportunity to seek a path to peace, a better future in Gaza without Hamas.”

“I’m grateful for Germany’s cooperation in holding Iran accountable for destabilizing policies including providing missiles and drones to Russia to use against Ukraine. And just this week the European Union followed Germany, the UK and France in sanctioning Iran’s leading airlines. This followed our own oil sanctions. This coordination is going to have to continue.”

“The death of Hamas leader Sinwar, who was responsible for the terrible terror attack, hopefully opens a concrete possibility of a cease-fire in Gaza, a deal to free the hostages of Hamas.”

STORYLINE:
US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz both said on Friday the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar opened an opportunity to secure a cease-fire to the war in Gaza.

The Israeli military announced on Thursday it had killed Sinwar in what appeared to be a chance front-line encounter.

Biden said he had told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to use the moment to "seek a path to peace" amid escalating conflicts in the Middle East since Hamas’ October 7 attack.

Scholz echoed this sentiment, saying a deal would also ensure the release of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza.

Biden was in Berlin for talks with European allies on Russia’s war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East.

He was also presented with Germany’s Order of Merit for his contribution to trans-Atlantic relations.
