STORYLINE:
China and the UK’s top diplomats called for greater cooperation in the face of challenges in a bilateral meeting in Beijing on Friday.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi Friday as Lammy makes his first visit by a Cabinet minister since the Labour government took control in July.
The two met in the Diaoyutai State Guest House and shook hands, before heading into a room for bilateral talks.
Lammy’s two-day trip is an attempt to reset ties with Beijing after relations turned frosty in recent years over spying allegations, China’s support for Russia in the Ukraine war and a crackdown on civil liberties in Hong Kong, a former British colony now part of China.
A Foreign Office news release said that Lammy would urge China to stop its political and economic support of the Russian war effort.
At the bilateral meeting when media was present, neither sides mentioned specific conflicts.
“The world is now facing unprecedented challenges, and competition between major countries should not become the backdrop of the era," Wang said.
"China is willing to work with all countries, including the UK, to seek peace for the world and pursue development for the mankind."
