It is also a widely recognized norm in international relations and is supported by the international community. STORYLINE:
China on Friday recognized South Africa’s decision to order Taiwan to move its representative office outside the capital, Pretoria by the end of this month.
Taiwan’s foreign affairs ministry said the government was still trying to dissuade South Africa from demanding the relocation, which it believes is due to pressure from China.
In Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning underscored the significance of the "One China principle" in the country’s development of diplomatic relations when asked about the matter at a daily news briefing.
China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, and says it has no right to diplomatic recognition or exchanges with other states.
Separately, Mao rejected the U.S. sanctions against two Chinese companies accused of directly helping Russia build long-range attack drones used in the war in Ukraine.
It is the first time the U.S. has imposed penalties on Chinese makers of drone engines and parts for “developing and producing complete weapons systems” in collaboration with Russian companies, the U.S. Treasury Department said.
Mao restated China had “never provided lethal weapons to any party in the Russia-Ukraine conflict."
At the briefing, Mao briefed reporters about President Xi Jinping’s visit to Russia for the 16th BRICS summit in Russia, next week.
