(6 Jun 1980) ROVING REPORT 8023: HAITI REPORT
Haiti in the Caribbean is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere. It is often ignored, but it has been in the news recently because of the steady flow of refugees to the United States, and the wedding in May of President for life Jean Claude Duvalier to a mother-of-two divorcee. He is the son of the feared Papa Doc Duvalier who terrorised his opponents with his private army called the Tonton Macoutes. There has been only limited progress towards liberalisation since Papa Doc’s death in 1971, but there is speculation that the Duvalier marriage could shift power away from the Old Guard and prepare the way for a better future. Roving Report has been to Haiti to bring back a vivid picture of this rarely filmed country and the man who leads it.
