"So this is the first time Kew Gardens has hosted Halloween at Kew. We’re very excited to do so. After many successful years of hosting Christmas a Kew, we just realized that Halloween has become a lot more popular in the UK in recent years, and we just want to create a lovely experience for families to come and make memories at."

14. SOUNDBITE: (English) Daire Basra, head of event operations, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew:
"It’s not too scary at all. It’s designed to spook rather than terrify. It’s got multiple different layers to it as well – we’ve got three different time slots of daylight, a twilight and a moonlight. And what happens is maybe the spook level just increases ever so slightly as the evening goes on. But it’s an event suitable for all ages."

23. SOUNDBITE: (English) Kevin Martin, head of tree collection, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew:
"It’s really interesting. It’s quite ironic, really. When we look at this tree, the carnivorous tree, it’s eating skeletons. And when we look at nature, that’s what’s happening within the ecosystem. When the leaves drop, and the organic matter breaks down, the tree uses that and that’s what builds in the growth. So it’s amazing really to see it in this spooky light. But it’s sort of telling a story of nature, how trees react with their environment and how they use all the things around and they break it down and then use that for growth. So yeah, it’s quite exciting."

24. Low angle tilt down of tree
25. SOUNDBITE: (English) Kevin Martin, head of tree collection, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew
"Yeah, that’s what we want to spook people. You know, that’s the idea of this trial with the canopies closing down, and especially here in the oak collection, it’s very dark. Then if you look back, it does look spooky, so that’s the aim. We hope it does give people a bit of a ‘ooh, I don’t quite like this, it’s a bit uncomfortable’ because that’s the fun of it and it’s really exciting to see this in the arboretum."
