STORYLINE:
Grieving Liam Payne fans have been gathering to leave notes, light candles and find solace in singing his songs together in downtown Buenos Aires, where the former One Direction singer died on Thursday.
Shockwaves spread around the world Thursday at the death of Payne, who shot to stardom as a member of British boy band One Direction and had to deal with intense global fame while still in his teens.
Buenos Aires police said Payne fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel in the trendy Palermo neighborhood of Argentina’s capital on Wednesday, resulting in “extremely serious injuries.”
Medics confirmed his death on the spot, the police said in a statement.
Police rushed to the hotel in response to an emergency call just after 5 p.m. local time, he said, warning of an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
The Associated Press could not confirm details of the incident, as an investigation is ongoing.
Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, told Argentina’s Todo Noticias TV channel that authorities were investigating the circumstances of his death and conducting an autopsy.
