"These cases were filed back for abuses that occurred in the 40s, 50, 60s, 70s, somewhat in the 80s. It’s a long time ago. I’m not excusing anything, but the fact remains that today the archdiocese is a much, much different place than it was 40, 50, 60 years ago. And the understanding of abuse is much different and more sophisticated than it was then. So, we have put in place programs beginning in the 1990s, zero tolerance policy."

"We have fingerprinted 220,000 people as part of our background checks for volunteers, employees and so on. And I think maybe most significantly, 165,000 school kids, school age kids are educated each year in age appropriate ways on the detection and reporting of abuse. I think it’s correct to say that there is no safer place for children in this country than in the parishes, the schools, the churches that that are part of the archdiocese."

"I would say that the process of trials and litigation is probably more harmful to victims than to be recognized and to be compensated. Frankly, we have reached as deeply as we can to compensate. We have avoided the filing of a bankruptcy. Many dioceses have not… many dioceses to file for bankruptcy. Archbishop was very clear. Bankruptcy is one extraordinarily expensive and therefore reduces our ability to compensate victims."

"It’s important to note for the faithful that you would ask that question that this settlement will not be funded from school or parish assets, real properties may be sold, but the assets of the schools and parishes will not, nor will assets of dedicated funds. The Catholic Educational Foundation, the call to renew and so on, those are not going to be used to pay this."
