2. SOUNDBITE (German) Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor:
“I will reiterate what I said before, and in many places. This has been a horrible, despicable, inhumane attack by Hamas on Israeli citizens, Israeli villages, people have been depicted in dehumanizing situations. And yes, this news has reached us. He was militarily responsible for Hamas’s actions. And this is why this is something you have to be aware of. Somebody who is responsible for dreadful crimes has lost his life. And I repeat, Israel has the right to defend itself against the attacks by Hamas. And it’s good that we have put this down as a common position here at the Council as well.”

4. SOUNDBITE (German) Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor:
“If we look at the large number of people killed and injured from the civilian population who are not Hamas, everyone understands why we together with the US are making the case for a cease-fire and for the release of the hostages because it would be the best way to deal with the situation. You know that President (Joe) Biden and others have made suggestions for a cease-fire and what it would look like and we fully support that. It was true yesterday and it is ever more relevant today.”

7. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"Today is marked by the death of Yahya Sinwar, and this day is both a turning point and a military success for Israel. I think of this as I address the families of October 7th. This occasion must be seized so that all the hostages can be freed and the war finally stopped. Indeed, military operations must be brought to an end. From now on, after this outcome, a cease-fire in Gaza must be accepted, and finally, a credible political perspective should be opened for both Israelis and Palestinians. We are working on this with all our Israeli, Arab, and American partners. The day after the war in Gaza, Israel will need solid guarantees for its security, the Palestinian Authority must be reformed, and progress towards a two-state solution must be made. In the immediate term, there must be a cease-fire in Gaza. Humanitarian operations, currently at their lowest point, must be urgently ramped up. We have to go forward to stop the violence perpetrated by settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank."

STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron reacted to the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar on Thursday.

Speaking from Brussels, Scholz, who has been one of Israel’s staunchest backers in Europe, said that Sinwar was "militarily responsible" for Hamas’ actions, reiterating that Israel had the right to defend itself against the attacks by Hamas.

Meanwhile Macron, who has been more critical of Israel’s military tactics and has urged countries to stop supplying weapons to Tel Aviv, called Sinwar’s death "a turning point and a military success."

"This occasion must be seized so that all the hostages can be freed and the war finally stopped," Macron said in Brussels.

He called for the Palestinian Authority to be reformed and reiterated France’s long-held backing of a two-state solution.
