STORYLINE:
Romania’s foreign minister discussed the fighting in the Middle East with Jordan’s foreign minister during a visit on Thursday to Amman, Jordan.
Romania’s Luminita Odobescu and Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi discussed efforts to stop the fighting in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, Jordan’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
A year after Hamas’ fateful attack on southern Israel, the Middle East is embroiled in a war that shows no signs of ending and seems to be getting worse.
Israel’s retaliatory offensive was initially centered on the Gaza Strip.
But the focus has shifted in recent weeks to Lebanon after Israel escalated its campaign against Hezbollah in recent weeks, after a year of near-daily exchanges of cross-border fire.
Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel the day after Hamas’ surprise attack into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023 ignited the war in Gaza.
Odobescu and Safadi also discussed the surge in deadly violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank over the past year.
Safadi said the violence in Gaza, Lebanon and the West Bank must stop in order to prevent a wider war in the region, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry statement said.
The Middle East has been bracing for an expected response from Israel after Iran launched roughly 180 ballistic missiles on Oct. 1, which the United States helped to fend off.
The tit-for-tat strikes and uncertainty about whether Israel might strike strategically important energy and nuclear sites in Iran have raised fears about escalation into an all-out regional war.
Meanwhile, Odobescu and Safadi agreed on enhancing cooperation in multiple areas including food security and education.
