RR7028 PERU: INCA HERITAGE OF THE PERUVIAN INDIANS

(13 Jul 1970) RR7028 PERU: CUZCO THE INCA HERITAGE OF THE PERUVIAN INDIANS

On May 31st 1970 the coastal areas of Northern Peru
were devastated by the worst earthquake in the
country’s history. 50,000 people were killed, over
300,000 injured and nearly three-quarters of a million
made homeless. Most of the victims were Indians,
who make up the poorest and most backward group
in Peru. The tragedy focused attention not only on
their immediate plight but on their general way of life.
The conquest of the Inca Empire by the Spanish
conquistadores in 1532 marked the beginning of a
long decline in their fortunes. Now, under the
sweeping reform programme of Peru’s military
government, the Indian is being promised a new deal
that will educate him, give him land, and bring him
into the market economy. For this colourful report, we
went to Cuzco – the ancient Inca capital high in the
Andes – to trace the Indians’ past and examine their
condition today.
