(17 Jul 1978) RR7829 MEXICO THE OIL BOOM
Over the last couple of years, Mexico has come from almost nowhere to be one of the brightest prospects on the world oil scene. If the Mexicans’ own estimates of their reserves are accurate, the country could well be sitting on more oil and natural gas than anyone outside Saudi Arabia. The finds have been made in the southern states but they have brought mixed blessings. Jobs and money abound, but they are not going to the local people, few of whom have the experience or skills the industry needs, and the break-neck pace of exploration has resulted in industrial pollution that has caused widespread damage to crops. This report shows what is happening and talks to an oil company spokesman and the governor of one of the affected states.
