"One Direction, they all built up a lot of goodwill and they made fans who felt like they knew them. And Liam, he was so effervescent on stage – really, really great. He was always funny on stage when he was introducing ‘No Control.’ And he was like, ‘This is our best song,’ you know, like, ‘call the radio and request it,’ which is something that superstars generally don’t say. But he was just so enthusiastic and that gung ho enthusiasm. And that just goes a long way. And I think a lot of fans felt that they still had that bond with him even after everything that he was going through, after the group and all his clear musical struggles, after the group, I think people just assumed and hoped they’d get it together and that he’d find himself as an artist."
