STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday dismissed a U.S. research group’s report indicating China is among the countries with the worst internet freedom around the world.

In an annual report on internet freedom released on Wednesday, the U.S.-based Freedom House said global internet freedom had fallen for the 14th consecutive year.

China and Myanmar were tied for the worst record among surveyed countries, the report said.

Asked about the report at a daily news briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning insisted that China was “a country ruled by law” and its people’s rights and freedoms were protected under the law.

“The organization you mentioned has long made false accusations about China, and its report is completely unfounded and has ulterior motives,” Mao said.

Separately, Mao briefed the media about Premier Li Qiang’s visit to Pakistan for meetings at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), where leaders of the member states discussed how to boost security cooperation and economic ties.

The SCO meetings come more than a week after two Chinese engineers were killed in a suicide bombing outside the airport in Karachi, the capital of southern Sindh province.
