STORYLINE:
Nine monkeys have suddenly died in a Hong Kong zoo, and authorities are investigating, Chief Executive John Lee said Tuesday morning in his weekly press conference.
The animals were kept in captivity in a small park in the centre of Hong Kong Island, the Zoological and Botanical Gardens.
It is a landscaped and well-maintained area close to another big park with a large aviary, and also close to Hong Kong’s main business district.
Lee said that authorities are doing autopsies and will work out toxicology reports too, for the animals that died.
Hong Kong is very sensitive to ailments of animals, because of the experience of SARS in 2002, a virus which was found to come from civet cats in mainland China and which caused the deaths of health workers and others in Hong Kong.
And the as yet unexplained COVID-19 virus hit Hong Kong hard with long years of restrictions.
Close to the zoo where the monkeys died, there is a small monument to the Hong Kong medics who died during SARS.
