STORYLINE:
Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees – UNRWA- met on Sunday with Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi in Amman.
Lazzarini and Safadi discussed the agency’s critical situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Jordan has warned against Israel’s seizure of UNRWA headquarters, condemning "Israeli attempts to halt the agency’s activities”.
In a statement, the government added the Israeli proposals against the institution as "a flagrant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter."
An Israeli parliamentary committee pre-approved a billthis week that would ban UNRWA from operating in Israeli territory and end all contact between the government and the U.N. agency.
Lazzarini warned earlier this week that if the legislation is adopted, all humanitarian operations in Gaza and the West Bank may “disintegrate,” leaving hundreds of thousands of people in dire need as war rages.
The bill needs final approval from the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.
Lazzarini said in a video briefing that "legally, the Knesset legislation violates Israel’s obligation under the United Nations Charter and international law."
