STORYLINE:
Authorities in Pakistan have tightened security arrangements in the capital Islamabad ahead of the 23rd Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting happening from 14 to 16 October.
Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, told reporters Sunday that unprecedented security measures had been taken for the upcoming summit.
Tarar said that the army and Pakistan Rangers are being deployed, as well as police forces.
"I believe that with regard to Islamabad, it’s a safe location, it’s a safe city and extra security arrangements have been made, extraordinary security arrangements have been made regarding this summit," Tarar added.
The SCO, which includes China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, and six other member states, is viewed by some as an alternative to Western alliance’s such as NATO.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin are the two main leaders joining the summit and expected to arrive on Monday.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahebaz Sharif announced a three day public holiday for the duration of the meeting.
The decision aims to ensure the safety and security of the event.
