RR7922A KWAZULU THE ZULU WARS CENTENARY

(30 May 1979) RR7922A KWAZULU THE ZULU WARS CENTENARY

1979 is the centenary of the Zulu Wars, when the British Army in Queen Victoria’s time clashed with the Zulu army under King Cetshwayo. The British suffered a major defeat at Isandlwana and carried out a heroic defence at Rorke’s Drift. Then the British Redcoats, with superior firepower and artillery, gained the initiative and crushed the Zulu forces at the battle of Ulundi, effectively ending Zulu resistance. Both whites and blacks took part in ceremonies marking the centenary. Today, the Zulus – South Africa’s major ethnic group numbering some 4 million – have their own homeland, KwaZulu. It is semi-independent. Chief Buthelezi is resisting full independence from South Africa, insisting that his people have the right to live in all of the country and not just in the designated homeland.
