“Today it was a very serious day, very concerning because the IDF attacked first, a position inside our Naqoura base, inside the headquarters, one tower with a mark of a tank where two peacekeepers were injured. Luckily, not seriously but they’re still at the hospital, but they were injured, which is an incredibly serious event. Then another base was hit – (UNIFIL posts) 131 close to Labbouneh close to a bunker, where our peacekeepers were in shelters and also, the communication system was damaged and also one vehicle. And yesterday, another position (UNIFIL post) 132, close to Ras Naqoura was also hit and the cameras were damaged. So, as I said, it’s very concerning because the parties have an obligation – an obligation to respect and protect our peacekeepers and what happened is also a violation of (UN Resolution) 1701, but also a violation of international humanitarian law. The issue is now discussed not only by the mission with the parties but in New York to try to find out what happened and why it happened.”

"We are urging the parties not only to use maximum restraints, but to cease the fire. This is a conflict that has been killing more than 2,000 people in the last couple of weeks, over a thousand people have been killed. And if you think that the conflict, 2006, 1200 people were killed and only in a few days more than the conflict in 2006. So this is incredibly serious. We are not only urging the parties, but it’s also important for the international community to see it as a priority and that there is no military solution, the only solution is political and diplomatic.”

STORYLINE:
Lebanon’s UN peacekeeping mission said its positions have hit by Israeli fire, leaving two peacekeepers wounded and damaging facilities.
Two UN peacekeepers were wounded after an Israeli tank fired toward an observation tower at their headquarters in Naqoura, UNIFIL said.
“It’s very concerning because the parties have an obligation – an obligation to respect and protect our peacekeepers and what happened is also a violation of (UN Resolution) 1701, but also a violation of international humanitarian law," said UNIFIL Spokesman Andrea Tenenti.
Israeli troops fired at a UNIFIL position in Naqoura where peacekeepers sheltered near the border, damaging a vehicle and a communications system, added Tenenti.
Tenenti urged all the warring parties to cease-fire saying “there is no military solution, the only solution is political and diplomatic.”
Around 10-thousand UN peacekeepers from 50 countries are operating in south Lebanon to implement the 1701 UN resolution that followed the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel.
