Harrods owner Mohammed Al Fayed was arrested and released on bail on Monday on charges that he tried to break into a safety deposit box of a business rival.
In a statement, the famous London department store said Al Fayed had agreed to meet police to discuss the allegations made by London tycoon Roland "Tiny" Rowland.
Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed was arrested after voluntarily going to a London police station.
He was released on police bail after being questioned about allegations of theft and criminal damage.
The questioning is believed to be in connection with claims by Al Fayed’s longstanding opponent, fellow tycoon Roland "Tiny" Rowland.
In a lawsuit late last year, Rowland claimed Al Fayed got employees to break into his archrival’s safety deposit box at the store in the hope of finding information to blackmail him into lying to the British parliament.
According to Rowland, Al Fayed wanted him to mislead lawmakers during an investigation of a feud between Al Fayed and former Home Secretary Michael Howard.
Al Fayed has had a long-running dispute with the British government for refusing to grant him citizenship.
Long a successful businessman, the Egyptian gained more international attention last
year when his son, Dodi, died in a Paris car crash with Princess Diana.
Al Fayed and Rowland have quarrelled for years, going back to when they were both bidders for Harrods.
They called a truce in 1993, but the battle was restarted when Rowland filed his lawsuit in December.
Al Fayed has denied Rowland’s charges.
