“In 1984 a Dutch art dealer who lived and worked in New York, George Mulder, said to Andy Warhol: ‘Why don’t you do a series of portraits about the reigning Queens of the world? And at that time there were only four, Elizabeth of the United Kingdom, Queen Beatrix from the Netherlands, Queen Margrethe from Denmark and Queen Ntombi Tfwala from Swaziland, now called the Kingdom of Eswatini.”

“When the kingdom said no. Warhol tried it in a different way, and he asked his companion, George Mudler, to go to Swaziland and try to get a photo anyway. And George Mudler went to Swaziland in 1984, tried to ask the royal family to persuade them to give him a photograph. But they they said, no, they don’t want you to do that. And then he found a photograph of Queen Ntombi Tfwala via a journalist. And that’s the photo used for the series.”

LEADIN:

An exhibition of portraits of reigning queens by the late American artist Andy Warhol is opening in the Netherlands.

It features 16 screen prints of four different monarchs and shows how the artist captured these powerful women – not always with their consent or approval.

STORYLINE:

These were some of the most recognisable women in their countries in the 1980s.

All of them are queens and all were captured in their regal majesty by American artist Andy Warhol.

Warhol loved the power of brand and image in his works, so it seems natural he would be drawn to the symbolism of monarchy.
