STORYLINE:
Jordan’s foreign minister stressed on Tuesday that his country’s priority was "to stop Israeli aggression on Lebanon".

Ayman Safadi spoke during a visit to Egypt where he met with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty for talks.

Officials said the pair discussed the conflict between Israel and the Lebanon based militant group Hezbollah during their meeting.

"The priority is to stop the Israeli aggression on Lebanon, then implement the initiative announced by the Lebanese Prime Minister in the caretaker government, Najib Mikati, to fully implement Resolution 1701," Safadi said in a joint press conference with Abdelatty following the talks.

Under U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the month long 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, the militants were to withdraw north of the Litani, and Lebanon’s armed forces were to patrol the border region along with U.N. peacekeepers.

"This is the priority now, and this is what will allow progress towards maintaining stability and preventing a greater regional escalation," Safadi added.

Last week Israel launched a ground invasion into southern Lebanon and has been bombarding Hezbollah targets following months of Hezbollah attacks on northern Israel.

On Tuesday Hezbollah fired another barrage of rockets into Israel, and the militant group’s acting leader vowed to keep up pressure that has forced thousands of Israelis from their homes near the Lebanese border.
