STORYLINE:
Vigils, commemorations and acts of remembrance were held in cities across Europe to mark a year since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.
A ceremony for the victims of the attack into southern Israel was held in Athens on Monday, marking a year since the deadliest attack in Israel’s history and as war rages on multiple fronts.
Members of the Greek community, Israel’s ambassador to Athens, as well as survivors of the attacks from last year were present to light candles and take part in the commemoration ceremony in the Beth Shalom Synagogue.
Members of the Hungarian Jewish community and representatives of Israel also held a commemorative ceremony on Monday in Budapest.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people attended a service in Vienna.
Austrian Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler was among those who gathered for the event at Ballhaus Square on Monday.
Members of the crowd were seen carrying Israeli and Austrian flags and held up their phones to form a "sea of light."
Last year’s cross-border attack, which killed about 1,200 people, caught Israel unprepared on a major Jewish holiday.
It shattered Israelis’ sense of security and left many countries, already on edge over Russia’s war in Ukraine, facing the prospect of another major conflict in the Middle East.
Israel responded by waging a war against the Hamas militants in Gaza, where the fighting has killed over 41,000 people and displaced around 1.9 million.
The conflict has spread in the region, where Israel now also is fighting Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, facing escalating threats from Yemen’s Houthi rebels and contending with a mounting conflict with Iran, which backs Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis.
