STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people gathered in Amsterdam’s on Monday to show solidarity with Israel on the first anniversary of the October 7th Hamas attack.

The event was marked by heightened security as pro-Palestinian demonstrators held their own demonstration.

During the gathering marking one year since Hamas militants’ surprise cross-border attack last year, which killed about 1,200 people and saw another 250 taken hostage, Israeli supporters unfurled a large Israeli flag, symbolizing their unity with people in Israel.

Pro-Palestinian protesters meanwhile, attempted to march from the city’s main train station to Dam Square where the commemorations were being held but were stopped by police.

Clashes erupted as the demonstrators confronted law enforcement officers, leading to a tense standoff.

Dozens of Palestinian demonstrators were surrounded by riot police, with officers using vans and mounted units to contain the situation.

Several protesters were arrested.

Commemorations and protests unfolded across the world on Monday to mark the anniversary of the October 7 attack, an assault that sparked a war that has devastated the Hamas-ruled Gaza strip, fuelled hostilities and bloodshed in other Mideast lands and ignited protests and divisions in farflung countries.

Israel responded to the attack by waging a war against the Hamas militants in Gaza, where the fighting has killed over 41,000 people and displaced around 1.9 million.

The conflict has spread in the region, where Israel now also is fighting Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, facing escalating threats from Yemen’s Houthi rebels and contending with a mounting conflict with Iran, which backs Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis.
