STORYLINE:
A ceremony for the Spanish victims of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack into southern Israel was held in Madrid on Monday, marking a year since the deadliest attack in Israel’s history and as war rages on multiple fronts.
Nissim Louk, father of Shani Louk, a German-Israeli woman who was kidnapped by Hamas militants from the Nova music festival, addressed attendees of the event organised by the Spanish Federation of Jewish Communities.
A photo of 22-year-old Louk’s twisted body in the back of a pickup truck ricocheted around the world and brought to light the scale of the militants’ attack on Israeli communities.
"Remember the picture of Shani on the truck, and if you have any doubts about what is good and what is wrong look at the picture," he said.
Ander Illarramendi, brother of Iván Illarramendi who was killed alongside his wife in the Kissufim kibbutz, said he would keep fighting for justice for the sake of his brother, even though it "hurts my soul."
Vigils, commemorations and acts of remembrance are being held across the world to mark a year since the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel as leaders call for an end to antisemitism and the release of Israeli hostages.
Last year’s cross-border attack, which killed about 1,200 people, caught Israel unprepared on a major Jewish holiday. It shattered Israelis’ sense of security and left many countries, already on edge over Russia’s war in Ukraine, facing the prospect of another major conflict in the Middle East.
