STORYLINE:
A commemoration ceremony was held in the Israeli Embassy to China to mark one year since the Oct.7 Hamas attack on Israel.

The event, with the attendance of diplomats and Israeli expats in China, had families of two hostages taken by Hamas share their stories and call for concerted efforts to bring them home.

“The horrors of October 7th 2023 that have so deeply engraved in our souls cannot ever repeat themselves,” said Irit Ben-Abba Vitale, Israeli Ambassador to China.

She said her government will not agree to any ceasefire that cannot provide “full and lasting security” to Israelis.

Last year’s surprise cross-border attack, which killed about 1,200 people, caught Israel unprepared on a major Jewish holiday.

Around 100 hostages captured that day have not been returned, a third of whom are believed to be dead, and cease-fire efforts have ground to a halt.
