STORYLINE:
Twenty Indonesian nationals and a Lebanese citizen evacuated from Lebanon and arrived in Jakarta by commercial plane early Monday. Officials said 20 more will likely arrive in the afternoon.
Indonesia’s president has instructed the foreign minister to prioritize evacuating Indonesian citizens living in Lebanon as hostilities grow between Israel and Hezbollah.
Indonesia’s embassy in Beirut had prepared evacuation procedures for Indonesian citizens as part of its contingency plan since August, according to the director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the ministry.
Currently, there are 116 registered Indonesian citizens in Lebanon, mostly students, migrant workers and people married to Lebanese nationals.
However, many have chosen to stay in Lebanon due to various personal reasons, an official said.
As the war in Gaza rages on, Israel is fighting a new war against Hezbollah, which began attacking Israel on Oct. 8, and an escalating conflict with Iran — which backs both Hamas and Hezbollah — threatens to drag the region into a far more dangerous conflagration.
