Why Elon Musk’s Robotaxi Is Such a Risky Bet for Tesla

At Tesla’s “We, Robot” event on Oct. 10, Elon Musk finally unveiled his much-anticipated Cybercab. Yet the world’s richest person was light on details, renewing investor skepticism about the viability of Tesla’s strategy. The robotaxi—which has no steering wheel or pedals—could cost less than $30,000 and “probably” will go into production in 2026, according to Musk. But Tesla has a track record of blowing past timelines for all manner of future products, including a particularly difficult time following through on Musk’s self-driving promises. The Cybercab’s development and deployment roadmap will be a significant new test of shareholder and customer patience.
