STORYLINE:
French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, met with Jordanian Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, in Amman on Sunday to discuss the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The latest developments in the Israel – Hamas war in Gaza, efforts to end the conflict, and the necessity of delivering humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territory were among the main topics discussed by both ministers, according to a statement from the Jordanian Foreign Ministry.
The Israel- Hezbollah war and its repercussions on the region, as well as the increase of violence and frequent raids in the occupied West Bank, were also on the table.
Barrot visit to the Middle East comes one day after French President Emmanuel Macron called for "a halt to arms exports for use in Gaza," saying it’s urgent to avoid escalating tensions in the region.
Macron drew strong criticism from Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by saying "the priority is … that we stop delivering weapons to fight in Gaza."
He made the comments in an interview with France Inter radio, which was recorded on Tuesday and aired Saturday.
France doesn’t deliver any weapons to Israel, Macron said.
In the meantime, Netanyahu released a video statement in which he called out the French president by name and referred to such calls as a "disgrace."
