STORYLINE:
Fashion designers in Ecuador’s capital Quito launched a Sustainable Fashion Week on Thursday, inviting people to reuse clothes and go against the so-called fast fashion.
According to the organizers, the event aims to raise awareness about the importance of caring for environment and how fashion can be a tool for positive change.
They say they try to inspire people to adopt sustainable daily practices and support brands that share those values.
The designers of the event work with natural fibre, trying to avoid mixing them with synthetic fabrics that make them more challenging to recycle.
"It is essential to give a new use to things that were already used and contribute to the environment and thus recycle and reuse," said fashion designer Stan Flores.
The organizers explained that some materials, like polyester, are recyclable, but also pollutants since their disposal can result in microplastics ending up in rivers and oceans.
According to the United Nations Environment Program, the fashion industry is the second largest consumer of water and is responsible for 8-10% of global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.
