STORYLINE:
Dozens protested on Friday in Ramallah against the Israeli airstrike that crashed into a crowded cafe in a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank killing 18 Palestinians.

Among the victims was a family of four, witnesses and relatives told The Associated Press.

Protesters called upon the world to take action and stop crimes against the Palestinian people, the Lebanese people, and against the entire region.

Ramallah resident, Omar Assaf, who took part in the protest, said:

"The world cannot remain a bystander, and this deceitful, lying world cannot keep saying that Israel has the right to defend itself."

"Israel kills, Israel attacks, Israel destroys infrastructure, and it kills many innocent, unarmed civilians," he added.

The strike pummeled a three-story building in Tulkarem, a city in the north of the West Bank, late Thursday, setting the building on fire, blowing bodies to bits and destroying the popular cafe on the ground floor.

It was the deadliest strike in the West Bank since the start of the war on Oct. 7.

The Israeli military said the strike had killed Hamas’s leader in the camp, who it said had planned and taken part in multiple attacks against Israeli civilians, as well as several other militants.

But witnesses and relatives of the dead said the strike also killed civilians, including a young girl and boy.

Tulkarem is a flashpoint city in the West Bank, known to be a bastion of Palestinian militancy.

Hamas did not immediately claim any of the dead as its fighters, but condemned the strike and called for Palestinians in Tulkarem to rise up.

A general strike has spread throughout the citie of the West Bank in mourning for those killed in Tulkarem air strike

Since Oct. 7, Israeli fire has killed 722 Palestinians in the West Bank, with frequent Israeli raids and military operations in Palestinian towns driving up the death toll.

In that time, Palestinian militants have launched a number of attacks on soldiers at checkpoints and within Israel.
