"It is 20 years since the release of the Peru (guinea pig) breed due to the work of INIA (National Institute of Agrarian Innovation) with approximately 34 years of research work. It was possible in 2004 to release this breed. The purpose and the main feature is that it matures quickly (8 weeks). What I mean by this, is that in the shortest possible time they gain the greatest possible weight."

STORYLINE:
Peruvian authorities on Thursday celebrated two decades since the creation of a genetically modified breed of guinea pig, a famous rodent whose meat has served for thousands of years as part of the diet of Andean villagers, although in the United States and Europe, it is considered a pet.
The breed was created in 2004 after 34 years of work at the National Institute for Agrarian Innovation, Juan Solorzano, a research animal engineer, told The Associated Press in the middle of one of the institution’s farms where thousands of guinea pigs are bred for study.
The guinea pig (cavia porcellus), originated in the Andes thousands of years ago.
It is bred in Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia, in areas where the Inca Empire spread nearly 500 years ago.
It was first described in 1554 by the Swiss naturalist Konrad von Gesner. ‘It is a very versatile species,’ said engineer Solórzano, who added that it can even adapt to soil at an altitude of 3,500 metres.
The ‘Peru’ breed, one of four in the Andean country, is characterised by the fact that the rodent reaches a kilo in just 56 days. Previously, other guinea pigs needed more than 160 days to reach the same weight.
