STORYLINE:
As the leaves changed color in NATO headquarters in Brussels for the autumn season, the organization held its first meeting with a new leader.
The new head of NATO Mark Rutte arrived with longtime former Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg to hold a meeting in the North Atlantic room at the level of ambassadors, ministers or leaders.
He was congratulated by his colleagues and received rounds of applause after adjourning the meeting.
Rutte took over the role of secretary-general on Tuesday, when he vowed to help shore up Western support for ravaged Ukraine and expressed confidence that he can work with whoever is elected president of the United States, the alliance’s most powerful member, in November.
NATO chiefs run the HQ, drive the alliance’s working agenda and speak on behalf of the 32-nation organization with one unifying voice. Continuity is usually the key word when they take up office.
