“Yesterday, eight families had to be told that their loved one had been shot in the line of duty. It was news they hoped would never come. Tragically, four of those families have made the ultimate sacrifice. Yesterday, North Carolina and this country lost four heroes and saw four other heroes wounded.“
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Mayor Vi Lyles, (D) Charlotte:
“Charlotte isn’t going to be the last place that this happens, but Charlotte will be the place that will heal, that will heal with dignity and respect for everyone.”

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Chief Johnny Jennings, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department:
“And we’re still kind of sorting through that right now. There’s we’re not ruling out the possibility that someone else was firing as well, but we’re also not ruling out the possibility that as we go through body worn camera footage and as we go through interviews, to make sure that all of that timeline matches up. So once we are able to determine that, then we’ll determine if we do need to look at other individuals or individual who might have been shooting.”

STORYLINE:
Police in North Carolina say a shootout that killed four law enforcement officers and wounded four others began as officers approached a home to serve a warrant for a felon wanted for possessing a firearm.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings says some of the officers who rushed to the Charlotte neighborhood Monday to rescue the first wave of downed officers were wounded as a second shooter began firing on them after they killed the wanted man.
After police negotiated with others inside, two females came out and were taken to a police station to be interviewed. Police also say a high-powered rifle was seized from the home.
