STORYLINE:
The family of Tyre Nichols gathered with supporters to pray outside the federal courthouse as the trial of three former Memphis police officers charged in his fatal beating came to a close.
Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith were among five officers who were were fired from the Memphis Police Department after the Jan. 7, 2023, beating. A jury could hear closing arguments on Wednesday.
Supporters stood in a circle for a prayer from Tennessee Rep. Justin Pearson while holding hands with RowVaughn Wells, Nichols’ mother.
"Speak up and speak out in the jury room," Pearson said. "God, be with us. God, walk with us. God, sit with us. God, even cry with us." They ended the prayer with a chant of "Justice for Tyre."
Tennessee Rep. G.A. Hardaway spoke to reporters, saying that this federal trial was just the beginning with a state trial pending and a Department of Justice investigation into the Memphis police department. "As soon as that U.S. Department of Justice patterns and practice investigation has concluded and we have that report, then we are going to start acting on that in terms of legislation also," Hardaway said. "I expect a lot today, but its just the beginning."
