New York – 1 October 2024

1. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Jared Polis, (D) Colorado:
"I mean obviously if you’re picking a used car salesman, you’d want JD Vance. Right? If I’d been in business, if I ran a car dealership, he’d be the guy. So you get a slick politician versus a coach, dad, military veteran. I think that really shined through."

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Elise Sefanik, (R) New York:
"This was an overwhelming, dominating performance by JD Vance. I think the American people, he spoke directly to them about issues that matter. The immigration crisis, illegal immigration crisis caused by Kamala Harris as Joe Biden’s open border czar. The national security crises, as well as the economic crisis, the inflation that families are suffering from."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Mark Kelly, (D) Arizona:
"Well, Tim Walz, because he has a vision and he articulated that vision in plain spoken language, compared to JD, who is a Yale-trained, you know, microphone for Donald Trump."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Katie Britt, (R) Alabama:
"Look, I think JD did an excellent job. I mean, he was his authentic self. And he talked directly to issues. And I was like, he knows that we need to go out there and talk about what we want to do for mothers, what we want to do for children."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Tom Cotton, (R) Arkansas:
"Well, the American people won the debate because they saw Kamala Harris’ record exposed in a way that it rarely is."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Ben Ray Lujan, (D) New Mexico:
"Governor Tim Walz standing there in a strong way defending our democracy, talking about the importance of a peaceful transfer of power. And JD Vance was there defending why he was an election denier."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Jasmine Crockett, (D) Texas:
"When asked point blank about reproductive access, he said, ‘well, we’ve got to do better about communicating’. He didn’t answer the questions. And honestly, as women are dying, we need answers. We don’t need dancing. And we get answers from Governor Walz."

STORYLINE:
Vice presidential nominees JD Vance and Tim Walz have used their time on the debate stage to focus the bulk of their attacks not on one another, but on those at the top of their rival tickets.

On Tuesday, Walz and Vance engaged in what was a more policy-driven discussion than that of their running mates’, but one with a few gaffes that might overshadow some of the substance in coming days.

Supporters of both Walz and Vance claimed victory in the debate held in New York Tuesday.

Walz, the 60-year-old Democratic governor of Minnesota, has embraced his folksy, plain-spoken demeanor since he joined the ticket earlier this summer. He’s leaned into his Midwestern roots and the title "coach Walz" from his former football coach days.

The strategy has seen him garner high favorability in polls but he faced a formidable opponent in Vance, the Republican senator from Ohio.

The 40-year-old has become a mainstay on cable news shows since he was announced as Donald Trump’s running mate in July.

Democrats and Republicans in the post-debate spin room had answers, both on style and substance.

"This was an overwhelming, dominating performance by JD Vance. I think the American people, he spoke directly to them about issues that matter," said Republican Representative Elise Stefanik of New York.

Democratic Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona disagreed.
