STORYLINE:
A Bulgarian government jet returned to Sofia on Monday with 89 passengers on board who were evacuated from Lebanon.

Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev, who welcomed the first returned countrymen at Sofia Airport, said the government was discussing all options for future evacuations.

The country’s deputy foreign minister, Elena Shekerletova, said 160 Bulgarians had so far requested evacuation.

More than half of those arrived on the first flight, she told reporters, adding that a new flight would be scheduled as soon as a further group is assembled, and travel is safe.

About 400 Bulgarian citizens live in Lebanon, but not all of them have expressed a desire to be evacuated, Shekerletova said.

"The embassy did a very professional rescue job from Lebanon, a very fast and professional response,” said 38-year-old mother of two, Jana Sharaf.

Holding her 20-day-old baby, she recalled the grim reality she had escaped just a few hours ago.

“On Tuesday the bombing started and very quickly it became very scary, very bad. We didn’t know where the bombs would fall, what they were targeting," she said, with her baby tucked into a sling on her front.

The move by Bulgaria came as some other European countries began pulling their diplomats and citizens out of Lebanon on Monday.

Germany sent a military plane to evacuate diplomats’ relatives and others.

It was not clear if Israel had made a final decision on a broader ground operation in Lebanon.
