"I was already modeling and I have always wanted to make an international debut. I couldn’t find a path, I couldn’t see a path. When I heard that Miss Universe lifted the upper age limit, I thought to myself that this was an opportunity. Whether I win or not, them getting rid of the upper age limit is a big opportunity for me. I will not let this pass and grab this opportunity no matter what the result may be."

STORYLINE:
81-year-old South Korean woman Choi Soon Hwa became one of the finalists in the Miss Universe Korea pageant.

Choi competed with 31 other participants for a chance to participate in the Miss Universe final, scheduled to take place in Mexico this November. Although she didn’t win, she was awarded the Best Dresser.

Choi began modeling when she was 72 and said on Monday that she wanted to make an international debut. "I couldn’t find a path, I couldn’t see a path. When I heard the Miss Universe lifted the upper age limit, I thought to myself that this was an opportunity."

Miss Universe recently lifted the upper age limit and also updated eligibility, allowing mothers and married women to participate in the pageant.

"Even at this age, I had the courage to grab onto an opportunity and take on a challenge. I want people to look at me and realize that you can live healthier when you find things you want to do and challenge yourself to achieve that dream," said Choi.
