STORYLINE:
Chinese President Xi Jinping and other leaders of the Communist Party Monday attended a ceremony at the Tiananmen Square to present flower baskets to the country’s fallen national heroes.
It is one day before the People’s Republic celebrates its 75th anniversary.
Participants, including veterans, students, retired officials and representatives of various sectors, gathered in front of the Monument to the People’s Heroes, singing the Chinese national anthem and paying silent tribute.
Then a group of honor guards laid nine flower baskets at the foot of the monument to the People’s Heroes.
Xi walked up to straighten the ribbons attached to the basket and led other leaders around the monument.
The other participants followed the leaders up the steps and laid yellow and white flowers.
To bolster Chinese people’s patriotism, the government designated Martyrs’ Day on September 30 to commemorate those who fought for national causes.
