STORYLINE:
The General Secretary of the far-right Freedom Party Christian Hafenecker said on Sunday that "there is a very, very urgent desire for change," following initial projections putting their party in the lead.
"We will now deal with this power accordingly. We continue to be humble. But I have noticed one thing: In Austria, there is a very, very urgent desire for change. And there will be a change with Herbert Kickl," said Hafenecker.
A projection shows that the far-right Freedom Party has a lead over the governing conservatives in Austria’s election and is well-placed for its first win in a national parliamentary vote. But its chances of governing are unclear.
The projection for ORF public television, based on partial counting, put support for the Freedom Party at 29% in the election and Chancellor Karl Nehammer’s Austrian People’s Party on 26.2%. The center-left Social Democrats were in third place with 20.7%.
Hafenecker said that today’s results should be "food for thought" for the president (Alexander Van der Bellen), adding that the "will of the voters must be respected" when it comes to the formation a government.
He also rejected the idea of FPO leader Herbert Kickl stepping back for making coalition talks possible.
Kickl, a former interior minister and longtime campaign strategist who has led the Freedom Party since 2021, wants to become Austria’s new chancellor on the back of the first far-right national election win in post-World War II Austria.
But to become Austria’s new leader, he would need a coalition partner to command a majority in the lower house of parliament — and rivals have said they won’t work with Kickl in government.
