STORYLINE:
Filipino workers in Lebanon appealed to their government on Sunday to fast track their return home, as the security situation worsens in the Middle East.
Workers said they fear for their safety as fighting escalates between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group.
“I have been residing here in Lebanon and I never thought of going home, but now our lives are in danger here we cannot stay here anymore," said Christine Lao, a Filipino worker in Lebanon.
"We are near the frontline of the bombings. Every time there’s a bomb explosion our building is shaking, every time there’s an explosion my sibling’s six-year old child always asks if we will already die?"
The Philippine government is bracing to evacuate thousands of Filipino workers in Lebanon in case the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalates further, Philippine officials said Friday.
More than 11,000 Filipinos live and work in Lebanon, often as house cleaners. Philippine officials have not yet ordered a mandatory evacuation of its citizens because it was still unclear whether a full-scale war would erupt, including an Israeli ground attack.
Many Filipinos were adamant not to leave their jobs in Lebanon and return to uncertainties at home, but they have been told to be ready to evacuate any time, according to Foreign Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega.
