STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people gathered in Iraq’s capital Baghdad to protest the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah by an Israeli airstrike in Beirut.
Holding posters of Nasrallah and chanting against Israel and America, locals gathered by the Hanging Bridge and Tahrir Square in the center of the Iraqi capital.
"O Lebanese our brothers, we will not forget you. Our blood and soul are with you. You are our brothers and we the Iraqis never forget you,” said protester Sadiq Jaafar.
The Iraqi government condemned the killing of Nasrallah in a session held earlier this evening.
Lebanon’s Hezbollah group confirmed on Saturday that its leader and one of its founders Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut the previous day. A statement said Nasrallah “has joined his fellow martyrs.”
Nasrallah, who led Hezbollah for more than three decades, is by far the most powerful target to be killed by Israel in weeks of intensified fighting with Hezbollah.
The Israeli military said it carried out a precise airstrike on Friday while Hezbollah leadership were meeting at their headquarters in Dahiyeh, south of Beirut.
The recent strikes in Lebanon and the assassination of Nasrallah are a significant escalation in the war in the Middle East, this time between Israel and Hezbollah.
