STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Lebanese scrambled to leave the country, but with limited flights, they had a few options.
Out of 10 flights flying out Saturday, at least two were cancelled. Most flights were to neighbouring countries, as most international airlines have stopped their flights out of Lebanon.
Counters were crammed with passengers, apparently as staff was reduced in the small Rafik Hariri airport, Lebanon’s only international airport.
A number of airport shops were closed, and army soldiers, usually deployed at the airport gates, were more visible than passengers.
It was a far cry from the crowds that filled the airport to leave, often in a panic, at the start of the escalation, before international flights were called off.
This time, it was a nation in shock over the announcement of the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Some travellers were in tears. Others were on the phone with their relatives in disbelief.
The national air carrier was the only one operating out of Beirut.
At one point, a Middle East Airliner, from the national carrier, was landing at the airport, with smoke rising in the background from an Israeli airstrike in the southern suburb of Beirut.
The airport is a few miles away from the suburb that has been pounded since Friday and where the leader of Hezbollah was killed.
