STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Chilean women marched on Friday to mark the International Safe Abortion Day, celebrated each September 28.
They marched and danced through the streets of Santiago, singing and chanting to the beat of drums, clad in black and wearing green handkerchiefs to signal their stance on reproductive rights.
The date was agreed upon by a collective of feminist, social, and labor organizations in 1990, resignifying a century-old law to grant freedom to the children of enslaved women.
Then known as the Free Womb law, it would now be centered on the rights of women to decide on their pregnancy.
Chile allows abortion on three legal grounds, the risk to the pregnant woman, fetal nonviability, or rape.
