STORYLINE:
Footage shows the extensive damage of Hurricane Helene on the island town of Cedar Key, as many communities off of Florida’s Gulf Coast feel the brunt of the storm.
An official is heard saying that the town had just recovered from Hurricane Idalia over a year ago in 2023.
Hurricane Helene weakened into a tropical depression on Friday after making landfall overnight in northwestern Florida as a Category 4 storm. More than 30 people in four states have died.
The storm remained at hurricane strength as it crossed into southern Georgia, before weakening into a tropical storm as it approached Atlanta early Friday.
Authorities continue to rescue people trapped by floodwaters and millions were without power across much of the southeastern U.S.
Helene came ashore amid warnings from the National Hurricane Center that the enormous system could create a “nightmare” storm surge.
