STORYLINE:
Towns in Cuba suffered from flooding and power shortages on Friday after Hurricane Helene caused heavy rains in parts of the country.
The storm barely grazed the island on Wednesday, but by Friday, some parts of Caribbean Island were still grappling with floods.
In the coastal town of Batabano, 56 kilometers (35 miles) west of Havana, residents were waiting for flood waters to recede while they salvage their belongings and animals from inundated homes.
Canoes and other types of boats were used to transport people and animals through the roads.
“We have been with water up to our waist since yesterday,” one resident said.
The town of over 27,000 people has also been experiencing power outages and unreliable communication.
In the event of flooding, electricity was cut off to prevent accidents.
But before the storm, power shortages were common in Batabano and many other cities in the country due to fuel shortages and power plant breakdowns.
The Cuban government had not yet fully quantified the material damage, and no casualties were reported.
Helene is the eighth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted an above-average Atlantic hurricane season this year because of record-warm ocean temperatures.
