2. SOUNDBITE (English) Camille Stevens-Rumann, interim director, Colorado Forest Restoration Institute:
“We’re in a place of such drastic climate change that we are not talking about whether or not some of these places will be a different kind of forest, but whether or not they will be forests at all.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Camille Stevens-Rumann, Colorado Forest Restoration Institute:
“Over 70 percent of our water in the western U.S. comes from our forested ecosystems and our mountains. For that water to come the way we want it – clean, at the right time throughout the year, we need to have forests, not just grasslands. And after these large fires, there are certainly some places that are regenerating just fine, and there’s other places where we really don’t see regeneration happening.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Jason Sieg, Acting Forest Supervisor, USDA Forest Service:
“We have an idea of what trees were there prior to the burn, but still a lot of questions around what trees could we expect to see in these landscapes decades from now, knowing that the climate is going to be warmer and drier.”

15. SOUNDBITE (English) Camille Stevens-Rumann, Colorado Forest Restoration Institute:
“Our goal is to understand how tree species are surviving outside of their current existing range. So if you think about where any given species is on the mountain, we wanted to push that envelop to understand if they are able to go a little bit higher in elevation, or perhaps a little bit lower.”
