STORYLINE:
China’s Ministry of Commerce on Thursday defended its decision to launch an anti-discrimination investigation into Canada’s trade measures targeting Chinese goods including electric vehicles and steel and aluminium products.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said all necessary measures would be taken to defend the interests of Chinese businesses.

The ministry announced an anti-discrimination investigation into Canada’s trade measures directed at Chinese products including electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products.

“This investigation adheres to the principles of impartiality, fairness, and openness and provides opportunities for public comments," said He Yongqian, spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce, at a press briefing.

He added that stakeholders affected by Canada’s measures including representatives of industries and businesses in China would be encouraged to participate in the investigation.

"China will take all necessary measures to defend the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises,” said He said.

Canada announced last month that it would launch a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles, matching U.S. duties on Chinese EVs. The tariff will take effect in October.

China has been increasingly at odds with the west over trade, with its EV industry bearing the brunt. It’s also been negotiating with the EU to avert import tariffs on Chinese-made EVs.

He said Wang Wentao, Chinese minister of commerce held a comprehensive, in-depth and constructive discussion with EU trade commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis last Thursday.

“Both sides clearly expressed their political will to resolve differences through consultation, agreed to continue promoting negotiations on the price commitment agreement and to be devoted to reaching a mutually acceptable solution through friendly dialogue and consultation,” He said of the meeting between Wang and Dombrovskis.
