STORYLINE:
Two pandas arrived in Hong Kong on Thursday.
They have been taken out of their natural habitat in China’s Sichuan province, and sent to live in captivity in Hong Kong’s Ocean Park entertainment venue.
The two pandas arrived in a giant jet at Hong Kong airport just before midday local time (0400g) Thursday.
They were slowly lowered in separate crates out of the plane, with the first panda briefly visible through the bars of its crate.
Hong Kong government official Eric Chan went to the airport to welcome the pandas.
Hong Kong’s leader John Lee has repeatedly promoted the pandas.
The territory already has four pandas at Ocean Park: two elderly animals, and their young offspring, which came as a surprise earlier this year, after a long time of attempts at making new pandas.
Hong Kong’s government officials have devoted a lot of attention to pandas.
