STORYLINE:
Wildfires on the outskirts of Quito were affecting air quality in Ecuador’s capital on Wednesday, as authorities advised people to stay indoors.
The fire started on Tuesday in a forested area and spread to threaten neighborhoods, forcing the evacuation of dozens of families.
Quito Fire Department Captain Gabriel Rodríguez said crews were now tackling two active outbreaks from the blaze.
Fire trucks, tankers, and three helicopters were battling to control the situation amid high temperatures and wind.
The mayor of Quito, Pábel Muñoz, called on citizens to stay indoors due to the poor air quality.
The north of the capital dawned with the smell of burning and particles and ash suspended in the air.
Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, who went to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, said on Tuesday night that he was suspending his agenda and would be returning immediately to the country.
